This is about the first date with my wife, and I first played it with the band “Ten to Nine” in 2000. When I picked up the ukulele a couple of years ago, I came up with this simpler arrangement. I think the song works better like this—quiet and alone.
Because we're all alone in our heads... particularly on a first date.
lyrics
We walk into a darkened room and we sit side by side;
Watch the screen, don’t wanna miss the show.
I make sure I seem relaxed as if I’ve nothing to hide;
Let’s watch this movie go.
Eyes up front, sit alone.
Steal a glance as the story unfolds
The story moves along, there’s romance and intrigue,
We’re going on a ride.
I start to care about these people on the screen
As I look into your eyes.
Eyes up front, watch the show.
Stretch a glance as our two hands move close.
What am I waiting for? I don't know...
We sit and watch two people falling into love;
That’s the way this movie goes.
But they never show their stories in the rough,
’Cause then we all would know.
Eyes up front, off the edge,
Take a chance; now you’re holding hands, what’s next?
